Phil & Sebastian - Lucky Peach Espresso
WHOLE BEAN
Tasting notes: Black Tea, Vanilla, Citrus
Lucky Peach is a delicate but juicy espresso with florals, stone fruit and sweet citrus. It's a beautiful espresso to drink without milk but also delivers great stone fruit sweetness as a cappuccino or latte. These will mostly be washed coffees from East Africa, but expect a few surprises from other countries that offer this flavour profile.
The coffee in Lucky Peach Espresso come from a partner in Burundi.
The Long Miles Coffee Project in Burundi has become a beacon of quality and positive change in the region. Founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson, Long Miles has built a reputation not just for producing world-class coffee, but for uplifting the communities they work with. Their approach ensures that farmers and washing station workers are proud of their craft, benefiting from higher payments and elevated quality standards. This ripple effect has raised the bar across the Burundian coffee sector, fostering a culture of excellence and sustainability.
Despite facing challenges like fuel shortages and economic instability, Burundi’s specialty coffee scene continues to thrive. The Carlsons spent years tasting coffee from across the country before focusing on the Gaharo Hill area, where they built their first washing station, Bukeye, in 2013.
For the farmers of Gaharo, coffee isn’t just a crop—it’s part of their heritage. The region, home to over 600 farming families, is rich in both history and resilience. The land supports not just coffee but also tea, beans, sweet potatoes, cassava, bananas, and taro, sustaining families throughout the year. The name Gaharo itself means “We are full” in Kirundi, reflecting the community’s connection to the land and their hopes for a stable, prosperous future.
The Bukeye Washing Station processes coffee from four distinct hills: Gaharo, Ninga, Munuinya, and Rugoma. Long Miles’ commitment to separating lots by both day and hill is rare in East Africa and reflects their dedication to showcasing the unique characteristics of each micro-region. This meticulous approach results in a diverse range of flavour profiles, offering coffees that are sweet, complex, and consistently high in quality.
Every step, from farm to cup, reflects Long Miles’ mission to make a tangible impact in Burundi while delivering exceptional coffee. As with all of Phil & Sebastian’s offerings, this green coffee is frozen to preserve its incredible freshness, ensuring you experience it at its best.
