Lone Birch - Holiday Limited Edition
If you know anything about me, it’s that I love getting lost in the woods. There’s a calm and a solace in them that feels unmatched. A stillness settles in, inviting my mind to breathe a little easier and take in the quiet wonder of everything that surrounds me.
I looked to some of my favourite wooded places across Manitoba for inspiration. The rolling hills of Riding Mountain National Park. The warm tones and natural contrasts of Spruce Woods Provincial Park. The stretches of land along the edge of Duck Mountain near our family farm. These are the spaces that shaped me, the places that continue to guide the fragrances I create.
Just south of our family’s farm there was a big old lone birch that stood along the pathway leading into one of our pastures. I can still picture it. This tall bright tree on its own, a landmark of sorts. Weathered and a little mysterious. If I had to guess, I would have said it was at least 60 or 70 years old when I was a kid. It always felt like it had been there forever. It was beautiful in such a quiet understated way. The kind of tree you notice without even meaning to.
Lone Birch came together almost immediately. The first test pieces glowed in a way that stopped me in my tracks. I found a clean true birch accord with an outdoorsy warmth that feels familiar without ever leaning sweet. Hints of fir and jack pine bring a gentle brightness while the tiniest brush of citrus lifts everything forward. I anchored it with vetiver, a clump grass with dry earthy woodsy qualities that I love for its ability to ground a blend without weighing it down.
The result is a candle that feels like stepping into a quiet stand of birch trees at dusk. A little wild, a little warm, and unmistakably Manitoba.
For this holiday season we've selected beautiful hand blown amber bubble glasses for our Lone Birch candles. Each candle brings warmth and comfort through the season and fills a space with that familiar evergreen glow. When the candle is finished, the glass can be enjoyed again as barware, a holder for small things, or however you choose to use it. A piece meant to be kept and enjoyed.
